Why does Australia endure a drought during an El Nino?

It is because due to the unusually warm water conditions over the central and eastern tropical Pacific which defines an El Nino, the bulk of the rising air and precipitation shifts into that region. In response the air over the western Pacific including the Indonesia and Australia areas does not rise as much, and in strong El Nino episodes may actually sink, both of which restrict rainfall in that area.
