How to prevent dirt and dust etc. always clinging to rug?!?

I have a rug in my living room...quite nice and new. Anyways, lint, fuzzy things from socks, other dirt etc. cling to it really bad. How can I prevent this from happening or at least what can I do to lessen what is happening?! Also, would scotch guard be of any help?!
