What did Malcolm X contribute to the Civil Rights Movement?

Malcolm X taught separatism, self-reliance, and clean living. He wanted black people to adopt Islam, give up being what white people wanted them to be, and define their own culture for themselves. He envisioned black-owned businesses employing black workers, for example, so that the economics of the black community would not rely on whites. His approach influenced the subsequent Black Power movement.
